Venugopalaswamy Temple at Devanahalli, Bangalore

Venugopalaswamy Temple at Devanahalli is a popular Maha Vishnu temple for the Hindus. The peculiarity of this temple is that it has two deities of Maha Vishnu in standing position, since Vishnu's idol are mostly fond on a serpent in sleeping position. Even though this is a small temple but it is also well known for its architectural marvel. This temple is an enceinte place of worship for the Banglorites and also for the Vishnavik's of south India. It is located near Devanahalli Town, Bangalore City of Karnataka State in India.

Religious Significance

This is the only temple in south India to have a two different Maha Vishnu idols found in different moods. These idols are also seen with different procession on their hands. Many devotees come here to see these unique gods and blessed by them. The Vaishnavik sect peoples of the Hinduism visit here yearly once who are from other states of India. Locally it is visited by its local people's daily on the pooja timings. The blessing from Vishnu Bhagavan is very powerful and true devotions will definitely bring the desired results of our prayers. Maha Vishnu is known here as the Venu Gopala Swamy, since this temple took shape here.

Festival Significance

The Chitarai festival is celebrated here in a grand manner annually. The main part of this festival is the procession of Maha Vishnu in the temple chariot. The chariot is pulled by many of its devotees on its way to its nearby streets. The entire pilgrims and public wait for the chariot to come and have a glimpse of Maha Vishnu inside this beautiful chariot. The procession is followed by lights and sound.

Mythological Significance

Maha Vishnu is the preserver of the universe as per the Hindu mythology. He is known to take birth on planet in various avatars. The Kali Yuga avatar is still awaited to see his presence on the planet earth. He is called Maha since he is the greatest of all gods. Worshiping Maha Vishnu is bliss for all Hindu peoples.

Architectural Significance

Venugopalaswamy Temple is nearly 600 years old and is found with many architectural styles. This temple is a perfect stone marvel. The upper parts of this temple are in the form of Dravidian style. Its stone arts are in the Hoysala style and the main structure is found in the Vijayanagara architectural pattern. Over all its mix of architecture is really looking marvelous and appreciated for its craftsmanship. In front of this temple, there is a small mandapa built with a triangular dome on it. From here it has a perfect symmetry to the main entrance that to have a large dome in obelisk shape. This is a three stories tower and uniquely seen with miniature works. This is followed by two large mandapas on its adjacent side. There are also few pediments seen on these structures. In between the two mandaps lies the main temple complex is built. The sanctum sanctorum of this temple is found in smaller size, but it is looking very cute. The inner complex has many monolith pillars, which has explicit carving activities. There are also many stone arts found on its walls. The very best eye treats are its murals. There are many murals found on the epics stories from the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. These are firmly applied on stucco's. The Navagraha portions of this temple are very unique to look and are unparallel with any other Navagraha sculptors found in India. There is much tiny temple architecture to be observed for its details. All of this structure is maintained in the traditional Hindu form of arts found in temple architecture of south India.
